and on the third day she rose again
I bore pretty easily with exercise. I've probably tried everything you can think of to maintain my health: running, pilates, yoga, swimming, rock climbing, roller blading, biking, kickboxing, jump roping, stand-up paddle-boarding, rebounding and even this workout with weighted drumsticks ;D to name a few.
About six weeks ago I started doing Alchemy Anywhere workouts. The anywhere workouts are only 30-40 minutes (including the warmup and cooldown) but much more intense than anything I had been doing before.
I was really enjoying the new challenge of this style workout but I would be sore for days afterwards. This led to an internet search for anything that wasn't protein powder or fish oil to aid in muscle and joint recovery so I could continue to improve my strength and level of fitness.
Enter collagen peptides.
Collagen is the main structural protein found in our skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. Our bodies cannot synthesize enough collagen on their own and our diets today contain minimal collagen.
I've usually seen collagen promoted as a beauty supplement but it turns out a daily dose of collagen can also help promote tendon and bone strength, healthy cartilage and joints, improved digestion, gut health, and deeper sleep.
Taking collagen daily over the past month has made me a believer.
Benefits I've seen:
Improved digestion: We recently were on a two week trip in the EU where we adhered to a strict diet of cheese, wine, and cured meats. In spite of this, I didn't suffer the normal bloating, cramping or other gut discomforts I normally would.
Softer skin: My skin is holding onto moisture much longer than it normally does and I feel like my face is actually glowing without any makeup. Could have been all the beach days but I'm thinking it's the collagen.
Increased energy and faster recovery: I worked out on vacation. Let me repeat, I exercised in a different country on the aforementioned diet of meat and cheese. Of course I still feel tired at the end of a workout (otherwise it wouldn't really be a workout now would it?) but by the next morning I feel refreshed and ready to go again. No more hobbling around for days like a feeble old lady.
I've been supplementing with Vital Proteins Marine Collagen in capsule form. A daily dose is 6 capsules so quite a bit of water is required to get them all down. I have found it's best to take them first thing in the morning on a truly empty stomach, otherwise you might suffer some ocean-flavored burps. Though not nearly as bad as the fish-burps you've probably experienced if you've ever taken fish oil, still a little disturbing.
